Question
My wife and I both believe that we have a substantial amount of Cherokee background.  I am doing extensive research as to who our Cherokee ancestors were and hopefully find out what specific tribe they belonged to.  When I do find them, what kind of “proof” do I need to show that they were indeed Cherokee Native American’s?  Also, what percentage of Native American blood do you have to have to be considered Native American by State & Government standards?  Thanks.

Ryan

Answer
Hi Ryan,

This is one of my favorite Native American Information websites:

I think #4 answers a few of your questions.

Now here's some genealogy sites that may help you on your quest.

Once you have your genealogical information contact the Bureau of Indian Affairs to find out if you can be considered for tribal status.
