AboutRenee Aun Expertise I have an extensive personal library on Native American Culture. What I don't know I can look up. I can also suggest reading material.
Experience This has always been an interest of mine. I have visited and stayed on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation twice.
Question My wife has a tattoo that she says is a symbol for her Cherokee clan. Can you help us identify this symbol & its origin? It is a small triangle with what could be a flag or smoke blowing from the top point. The tattoo is located just below her left collar bone. My wife was adopted, and she remembers getting the tattoo when she was 4 or 5. She learned recently that it was her natural grandmother who gave her this tattoo. Is this a common practice? I can send you a photo of the tattoo if it will help.
Answer Hi Brandy,
First I'd like to say that you are the first male Brandy I've ever met. I guess if men can be called Marion (like John Wayne) then men can be called Brandy. I learn something new every day. <g>
If your wife was tattooed, that is extremely usually and not traditional as Cherokee women were not tattooed, only men.
You can send me a picture if you wish and I'll see if I can find anything. It sounds like some symbol for home.
