Question
I was just diagnosed with cancer.  A few days later, I was meditating in my backyard, and I opened my eyes to find a hawk sitting in a small jade tree about 10 feet from me.  The hawk stayed about 15 minutes and then flew off.  I have never had a hawk in my yard to my knowledge.  I was wondering if this was a message to me.

Answer
Laura,

Most people who ask this question happen upon an animal and ask for some meaning. In those cases, I don't feel that there is any significance.

You were meditating and in a prayer-like state of mind. The Hawk came to you and stayed after it saw you open your eyes. That interests me because animals fear predators and they know we are predators because our eyes are situated in the front of our skulls.

You must understand that only you know if you were chosen to receive a message and what that message is. I am not a Holy person and I can not tell you the meaning of this visit. I can only act as a guide and perhaps equip you with some ideas so you can put this puzzle together for yourself.

Hawk has superior sight. They soar high in the sky, very close to the Spirits. They have the ability to look down and see the big picture, but they can also focus on a tiny little mouse.

Hawk has an amazing ability to adapt and survive in any surroundings or circumstances. They live in rural areas in trees and in cities on top of stall buildings. They hunt along major highways and in country fields.

The Celts believed Hawk empowered a person to examine in depth that which is positive so that it may be integrated into the person's life and that which is limiting so it can be released.

In Egyptian lore, Isis is said to have shapeshifted into a Hawk to save Osiris. Horus carried Hawk medicine which allowed him to see the "unseeable".

Among Native American traditions, Hawk is the messenger of change. Hawk reminded the people they needed to be awake and aware and can achieve great things through persistence and sheer strength of will.

So look into yourself. Have you set limitations and boundaries? Are you frozen by fears? Are you soaring with a light spirit and seeing the bigger perspective?
Only you can figure out if this visit has any meaning.

Good Luck. I will keep you in my prayers.
