About Richard Sutton
Expertise
As a direct reservation trader in all aspects of American Indian arts since 1985, I've answered questions regarding cultural property issues, origins of traditional crafts, materials and techniques, collecting, authenticity, symbols and, of course, repairs!

Experience
My primary focus is on Southwester American Indian Nations and their people, but I also have experience in Plains and Northeastern traditions, having engaged in active trade and retail since 1985 and study for most of my life.

Publications
I was a guest on Fox Network "Lifestyles" program, during the 1990s, to discuss how to tell forgeries, and authenticating jewelry as Native American work. I have also written extensively for our website, www.kivatrading.com and our Ebay Store.

Subject: old american indian blanket/rug

Question
QUESTION: i have an old (around 1900 or perhaps earlier) blanket or rug that is about the size of full size bed. it is dark brown and off white horizontal stripes. it is pretty heavy so that is why i think it may be a rug,  way too big to be a horse blanket but thick like that.  it was purchased by a friend's aunt who traveled the US after graduating school many many years ago she is no longer around to ask the details of the origin.if you could help me out or direct me in the right direction..is this something that belongs in a museum of at the bottom on my bed?

ANSWER: Sounds like a neat piece! From your description, this sounds more like a "trade" blanket than a handwoven -- most of these were quite heavy and were traded by the US Government-authorized traders to reservation "settled" tribes.  Several of the original companies who produced these are still in business, the chief one being Pendleton Woolen Mills.

Handwoven rugs and blankets contain tell-tale evidence of their production in the weft and warp of the weave itself, and usually follow relatively prescribed patterns and colors.  Of course, sight unseen, it is very difficult to give you an accurate reading on your item.  You should take it in to a well-established dealer in American Indian arts in your area for a better idea. Hope this helps.

QUESTION: hi again!! i did some looking on the internet at some old trade blankets and all of those had beautiful patterns on them .  mine however is a plain jane of just stripes.  how should it be stored? hate to say it's in bag right now.

Answer
I can recommend that you visit the Indian Arts & Crafts Association website: www.IACA.com and go to the members portion of the site. Click on Wholesale/Retail and then click on your state.  This will list member businesses who are voluntarily bound by ethical considerations and who may be able to give you a full appraisal, or refer someone they trust locally.  Another resource, that is also well-versed in appraisal of trade items is Col. Doug Allard's auction website, www.allardauctions.com/  They may be able to offer you an appraisal if you send in the blanket. Try to gather any information you may be able to regarding date acquired, place, etc. Best of luck in your research.
