Subject: 1817 Cherokee Reservation Roll

Question
Do you know if the original applications for the 1817 Cherokee Reservation Roll have been preserved?
I have the .pdf copy of the Roll, but I'd like to see the original application form for John Speers.
I have searched the NARA site, and it's pretty inconclusive.
I know that such land grants entailed dower rights, so I would guess the wife's name would be included, since he had a family of seven, as noted on the Roll.

Any help I can get will be appreciated.

Jim Patrick

Answer
Hi Jim,

I don't know what sites you've checked so far, but here are a few suggestions:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncqualla/sources.htm

http://www.allthingscherokee.com/faq_proving.html

http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/index.htm

This book should be helpful also. It may be out of print but you should be able to find a used copy at the Barnes & Noble or Amazon sites if your local library doesn't have it.

"Cherokee Roots," Vol-1, Eastern Cherokee Rolls
by Bob Blankenship

There are census sites available also that will cost a few dollars to use.

The goverment may be able to get you copies of records at a fee also:

Good Luck!
Warm Regards,
Renee Aun
