Native Plants - Banana Trees

Expert: Scot A. Watkins - 12/10/2004

Question
Do banana trees produce seeds?   Are they in the banana fruit?

Answer
Stan,

Bananas do not produce seeds in their fruit. Bananas reproduce asexually. The offspring is identical to the parent, they spread by means of rhizomes (underground stems). A rhizome will send up a false stem where leaves emerge. Bananas produce a stalk which contains numerous flowers which will become the fruit.
Bananas are often considered trees, actually they are a large herb.
