Question Jacqueline,
1. I am using bone meal as a calcium supplement.
Have you ever used this and is it safe?
2. Do you know of any remedy that specifically strengthens and supports the hypothalamus?
they say that it is the key factor in chronic fatigue syndrome, which i have.
thank you for any direction
Leah
Answer Hi Leah,
1) You should never use bone meal (dolomite) as a calcium supplement. This product comes from the ground bone of slaughterhouse animals. It is often contaminated with lead, mercury and other "naturally occurring" toxins - which are allowed in bone meal because they are part of the material and not added or appearing as contaminants. There were many older nutritionists who promoted dolomite - but basically we know better now. Use calcium citrate, or a similar chelate - it is much safer and has excellent absorption.
2) There are several things you can do to support the hypothalamic axis. One of the best known is phosphatidylserine - find one from lecithin at 100mg 1 to 3 times daily. DHEA can be helpful - for a woman don't do more than 5 mg/day without a test to check levels. Herbally, Rhodiola rosea and Ashwaganda are good choices. Some amino acids and their derivatives are also useful for this - but it is usually good to test before you supplement. Testing is available through Neurosciences Lab (https://www.neurorelief.com/). Finally, take a good multivitamin. Your hypothalamus is part of your brain and as such healthy function depends on having enough of most of the B Vitamins and trace elements that keep the cells healthy and allow them to have good metabolism.
