Question
I have a 3 year old that gets severe asthma when he gets a cold that is reasonably bad(ie, nose gets very gunky).  He has been allergy tested and has only a minor allergy to dustmite.  Of course trying to keep a 3 year old from getting a cold is virtually impossible.  And we do our best with eliminating the dustmite.  Are you able to suggest any naturopathic remedies.  He does not suffer asthma at other times, with the exception of a very mild easily contolled onset with cold air.  Any help most appreciated.  Kind Regards.

Answer
Sharyn,

In a child this age, I would also consider food allergy testing.  Rather than putting him through blood tests, I would suggest an elimination diet.  This is usually done by removing the most common allergens from the diet for 2 weeks (Milk, Egg, Peanut, Fish/Shellfish, Soy and Wheat) then reintroducing them one at a time every 5 days to see how he reacts.  I know this sounds cumbersome, but it is really common in a small child that a food allergen is a significant cause of this problem.

Supplementally, I would give fish oil (1000mg/day).  Get a flavored liquid or a product like CorOmega which is a gel. You can also give 100mg of vitamin C/day.  For immune support, you can get Gaia Kids echinacea-goldenseal and give 10 drops 2 times daily.

Some other things to consider:

1) get allergen protectors for your child's sheets/pillows.
2) get an air purifier for his room - run it during the day, not at night when he is sleeping.
3) Keep windows shut at night to prevent pollen from settling in the room
4) do not allow pets to sleep with your child
5) If possible, remove rugs from your child's room, or vacuum frequently with a HEPA filter.

I hope this helps.

Please let me know if you need more information.

In Health,

Dr. Jacques
