Subject: eye pain

Question
hello,
I am 33 years old and for the last year have experienced a persistant dull ache behind my left eye. The pain usually radiates to my left temple and left cheekbone. my right eye feels normal but the left eye feels extremely tired and i feel this most days some worse than others. i felt these symptoms years ago but they subsided and now seem to be backin full force. I have seen eye specialists, had a cat scan and they can find nothing wrong. they gave me panadol forte which doesnt take the symptoms away but makes me a little more able to sit with the pain. i have a long history of substance abuse which may or may not have any relation. I have been vegetarian and vegan for close to a decade and blood tests indicate i am not deficient in anything.it sometimes weeps also. Its very frustrating. it gets progressively worse throught the day. any ideas on the possibilities of what it could be would be greatly appreciated. thankyou so much.

Answer
Suzie,

I am sure the thought of seeing another specialist might not sound thrilling, but have you seen a neurologist?  This sounds like possibly occular migraine or even a variation of a cluster headache - or possibly an atypical trigeminal neuralgia (where there is often dull/radiating pain in contrast to normal trigeminal neuralgia whre the pain is sharp and intermittent).

If you have already seen a neurologist, then the first thing I would suggest would be acupuncture.  But let me know and I will also provide some other suggestions.

In Health,

Dr. Jacques
