I am a 36-year-old woman who had sudden hearing loss back in April when I had a sinus infection while pregnant. I was treated for fluid in my ears with Claritin and Nasonx, but my hearing loss never got better. I thought it was useless to try to get rid of the fluid while pregnant and thought it would go away after I had the baby, so I did not go back to the doctor at the time. I had lots of cracking in both ears after having the
baby in August but the hearing loss remained. I went to the ENT doctor in September and was found to no longer have fluid and to have no problems with the eustachian tube. I had an MRI which did not reveal anything. A hearing test revealed mild hearing loss on the right and moderate on the left. Also, I have had problems with Candida and have also had a problem with my ears being sensitive in the past which stopped after going on a Candida diet. It seemed to flare up whenever I had environmental allergy problems so I was wondering if it could be Candida related. Do you know if it is possible to have Candida or fungus deep in the ear that could affect conduction or the nerves and if any related hearing loss could be reversible? If you have any ideas about this strange situation, your input would be greatly
appreciated.
Sincerely,
Melodie P.
Answer Melodie,
There are really only two kinds of hearing loss - the kinds related to problems in the ear itself and the kids that are neurological. You have diagnosed hearing loss, so something is clearly not right. Before pursuing any home treatment, I would make an appointment with a neurologist to look at other causes.
