Naturopathy - pre-eclampsia

Expert: Kristina Conner, ND - 10/30/2009

Question
I recently suffered from a rare form of pre-eclampsia where I suffered from high blood pressure 4 days after giving birth. I was advised to not have anymore children because there is a 25% chance that it could happen again. I would like to have another baby.I have heard that low vitamin d can cause pre-eclampsia. Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening the next time I am pregnant?

Answer
Hello Mere,
Thanks for your question.  There is some information linking deficiencies such as vitamin C, magnesium, and perhaps other nutrients like Vitamin D.  But that does not guarantee that supplementing with any or all of these could prevent pre eclampsia if it developed before for another reason.  There are likely other things that you might be able to do to lower your risks, for best results with this consider seeing a ND in your area because it's a good idea to enlist some individual guidance.  Good luck,
Dr Conner
