Back and Neck Injury - neck

Expert: Dr. Peter Carr - 10/2/2009

Question
i do a lot of work on cars, and recently i was busy undoing bolts under a car when something popped in  my neck. i couldn't really talk as it was too painful. it's felt as if something popped out of my neck. this isn't the first time that it has happened, but normally if i rest and have a drink it will pop back into place; however this time i had to push it back in to place by sticking my fingers down my throat under my jaw. i know that it has something to do with straining. any idea's what this could be?

Answer
D;

Okay, this is very strange.   I immediately started to let my mind wander on this one, and I would need to know more about what you have.  Straining the neck can flare off a disc injury, it can also flare off an instability issue.

I would IMMEDIATELY recommend that you get what we call stress views of your neck.  These are regular x-rays, with the addition of flexion(looking down) and extension (looking up).   Are you getting numbness in your arms/ hands?  Are you weak in the hands?  Clumsier?

I really want you to follow up with me on this... it could be a weird variant, or there could be something really wrong here.  Please use the follow up function here on allexperts, and get back in touch with me after you have had the x-rays.

If youa re in Washington, come directly to my clinic and we'll take the pictures!
