AboutHenry Babcock Expertise I learned needlepoint from my grandmother over 30 years ago. I can answer most questions on the subject. I know about producing needlepoint as well as cleaning, repairing and restoring.
Question I have a small needle point rug I made 20 years ago, I cannot use the colors anymore but would like to keep it for my grandchildren - how do I store it?
Answer Caroline,
I would first recommend the rug be cleaned, re-blocked, and dried properly. If you search online for "needlepoint rug cleaning" you can find several services that will do a good job.
Once that is done, or if it is absolutely unnecessary, here are some guidelines:
Store flat, but if space is limited, you can roll the piece around a cloth covered tube. Store it in a dry, dark place with adequate air circulation around the piece.
Don't use plastic; it will trap moisture. Use clean, washed sheets, pillow cases or bags of unbleached muslin.
Keep bugs out; use moth crystals (not moth balls) and follow the manufacturer's instructions on how much to use, but do not let the crystals come in direct contact with the needlepoint.
