Needlepoint - 7 point canvas

Expert: Vinette de Phillipe - 10/4/2008

Question
I found a 7 point Monk's cloth at Hanford's Fabrics online.  Would that also work as a canvas for needlepoint.  I have an old needlepoint pillow pattern that I want to repeat but it requires a 15 x 15 in. 7 point canvas.  I tried writing to the company but got no response.

Answer
Hi Gayle,
The main difference between monks cloth and canvas is the stiffness.

Canvas is a very stiff, firm type of fabric, where the monks cloth is a softer fabric.

If you are going to use it for a chair cover, you would need to use the canvas as it will hold up better with use.  But if you are going to use it for a picture, wall hanging the monks cloth will work well.
