Needlepoint - how many strands of yarn

Expert: Henry Babcock - 10/23/2008

Question
ok I am stumped.  I bought a canvas awhile ago with Paternayan yarn. I have never used this type of wool as I used only Bucilla.  The canvas is 14 mono.  I tried 2 strands and it is way too thick and than I tried 1 strand and it does cover but I am not sure this is correct.  The picure is of 4 deco women and I choose to use velvet for the hair at one strand and it works beautifully.

I have worked with Perle cotton in the past and am wondering should I switch to it.  I understand that Perle Cotton now comes in different weights.

I work in basketweave stitch so switching to Embroidery Thread would be a pain, to have to drop the needle after every stitch.

HELP!!!   I am an experienced stitcher.  Oh and one other question, I bought silk combination for face and should this be worked in 1 or 2 strands?? It is very nice to work with however extremely costly for a whole needlepoing.

Answer
Lily,

I'll try to answer everything the best I can.

If you are using 14 count canvas, two strands of Paternayan would be the right number.  Using one strand will probably result in the canvas peeking through.  If two strands looks too thick, you might try increasing the stitch tension a bit.

The choice to switch to cotton is up to you, but personally, I think wool looks best for needlepoint.

As for the silk combo threads, you will have to try out some samples using both 1 and 2 strands.

There are not any firm rules to most of these inquiries; you just need to make some small samples and go with what looks most appealing.

Hope this helps,
