AboutHenry Babcock Expertise I learned needlepoint from my grandmother over 30 years ago. I can answer most questions on the subject. I know about producing needlepoint as well as cleaning, repairing and restoring.
Question I purchased antique needlepoint that had been a chair back and chair seat.
The pieces are in excellent cond. except that where the chair arm supports
were, the rectangle of the needlepoint had been cut around the arm.
Otherwise they are virtually rectangular. I think I could fill in the
background if only I could interweave the petitpoint/grospoint mesh and fill
in the gap. It would be a shame to have to waste all the handwork around
the gaps. have photo, it was ebay auction #14026364991 still online.
Answer Robin,
I was not able to find the auction. I understand what you want to do though. It is possible to weave a new piece of canvas into the area where the canvas was cut away for the arm of the chair. The instructions for doing this are too involved for me to answer in this format.
I am going to recommend that you look for a book called "The Needlework Doctor" by Mary Kay Davis. I just looked and there a several copies available on Half.com for under $2.00. You could also see about borrowing the book from a library. You will find detailed instructions, with pictures, for a few canvas joining techniques.
