Subject: Joining needlepoint squares into a rug

Question
Should the individual needlework squares be blocked first before the joining as there is very little distortion in the finished block? Also, is there a book that describes and has pictures of the stitches and the process of joining?

Answer
Cathy,

If the individual pieces are already completed, they should be blocked before joining.

For very detailed instructions on creating needlepoint rugs, I recommend "The Needlework Doctor" by Mary Kay Davis.  There's a section in chapter  15 on joining canvas, and chapter 19 is about making needlepoint rugs.

Hope this helps,

Henry Babcock
