Needlepoint - cleaning a newly finished needlepoint

Expert: Henry Babcock - 8/28/2008

Question
I just finished a needlepoint that I worked on a frame.  There are a couple of lines of dirt? discoloration? along some of the places that were on the bottom roll bar.  Could I use a Tide stain stick?  If not what is the best way to clean it?  What do they mean by mild detergent?  Woolite? Dreft? or what?  Thank's for your help.

Answer
Maria,

I am not familiar with the Tide stain stick, but I would caution against using something that may have strong chemicals or cleaning agents on needlepoint.  Ivory soap (powdered) is often recommended for the gentile cleaning needlepoint requires.

Some very good instructions for cleaning and blocking needlepoint can be found at the website for the American Needlepoint Guild:

Hope this helps,
