Needlepoint - needlepoint rug

Expert: Henry Babcock - 3/28/2009

Question
How do I finish the back of a needlepoint rug? It is an 8 inch canvas, done with cross stitch using wool, 25 by 50 inches. Also, does it need to be stretched or just lightly ironed on the back. It is not out of shape at all. Thanks so much.

Answer
Judy,

I apologize for my delay in responding.

If the piece is still square you won't need to block it.  You could iron it on a low setting to take out any wrinkles.

There are a few different ways to finish the back of a rug.  You could just miter the corners and hem the raw canvas edge underneath; you could add a light lining to the raw hemming; or you can do an interlining underneath the lining.

If you really want detailed, step-by-step instructions with illustrations, check your library for a book called "The Needlework Doctor" by Mary Kay Davis.  You might also find an inexpensive copy on half.com.  This is a great resource for everything about needlepoint.

Hope this helps,
