AboutHenry Babcock Expertise I learned needlepoint from my grandmother over 30 years ago. I can answer most questions on the subject. I know about producing needlepoint as well as cleaning, repairing and restoring.
Where can I obtain detailed information about how to finish a Christmas Tree ornament -- a book, a web site, etc. I have searched the Internet without success. The ornament that I have done is on 18 point canvas and is very detailed with many points extending out around the edges. I want to sew on a backing of moire and then stitch a small twisted cording around the edges. Specifically I need to know how close to the stitching I can trim the edges of the canvas without having the danger of the decorative stitching coming loose.
Is it possible to stitch and turn a rather complex piece, or should I make a complex piece into a simple round or oval shape by adding background stitching for ease of sewing and turning?
Also, if I sew the twisted cording onto the ornament after it is backed and turned, how do I join the cording so that it looks to be one continuous piece? I know how to do it on a pillow, but in this method the cording has a twill tape attached and it is sewn directly into the seam of the pillow.
Any help would truly be appreciated.

Answer Donna,
One of the best books detailing every aspect of needlepoint, including finishing projects is "The Needlework Doctor" by Mary Kay Davis. You could request it from the library, or you can most likely find a copy on eBay or Half.com.
For something small like an ornament, you should leave at least 3/4" of unfinished canvas. I suggest you simplify the piece by making it round or oval with a contrasting background, so that the design stands out.
As for your question about the cording, that's outside my area of expertise. You should try posing that portion of your question in the Sewing section of AllExperts.
