Needlepoint - petit point

Expert: Henry Babcock - 5/5/2009

Question
I recently watched someone do some petit point, and I would love to know how to do this myself.  I can't seem to find anything on the net specifically for petit point.  Any ideas on where to find instructions on "how to..."?  thank you.

Answer
Sue,

Petit point, and gross point, refer to the canvas count.  Both will fall under the subject of needlepoint.  Generally, petit point refers to canvas that has 18 stitches per inch or greater, and gross point has 16 stitches per inch or less.  The techniques are the same for either category.

Try searching for "how to needlepoint"; this will yield many sites with instructions on how to get started.

If you've never done any needlepoint, I would recommend you try out a small, inexpensive kit that has a 12 or 14 count canvas first.  You can develop and practice your skills on that, then graduate to a petit point canvas for your next project.

Hope this helps,
