Needlepoint/Turning chairseat into throw pillow

Question
I have found my mother-in-law's pansy motif chairseat--halfcross stitch, not basketweave. I would like to cut it down and turn it into a throw pillow. Would basting muslin to the back and stitching around four or five times at the ten inch circumference, then cutting out the center motif as a ten inch circle, work? Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Answer
Mary,

I sincerely apologize for the delay in responding to your inquiry.

Making cushions is not one of my stronger points.  Your idea sounds pretty good. For myself, I would check with an upholsterer for some pointers before proceeding.  The cushions I have made, were all stitched with 3 or 4 extra rows on all sides as a nice border for the stitching to hold to the backing.

You could also check out books on upholstery or needlepoint finishing at a library.  I have often found good tips and tricks in some of the older publications.

I wish I could be of more help,
