Needlepoint - how to block a completed canvas

Expert: Henry Babcock - 9/23/2007

Question
I have two completed needlepoint canvases, and I need to block them. Do I need to buy a blocking board, or can I use T-pins and an ironing board? I have never blocked a canvas before. Thanks for your assistance.

Answer
Susi,

T-pins and an ironing board will not be strong enough to hold a needlepoint under the tension required for adequate blocking.  However, you don't necessarily have to purchase a specialized blocking board.  A nice, flat piece of 5/8 or 3/4 inch plywood would work fine.  You will also need stainless-aluminum push pins, or brass nails, for holding the needlepoint in place (they won't rust while in contact with the wet canvas).

A good outline of the blocking process can be found at the American Needlepoint Guild's website:

You can also find books at the library which give more detailed instructions for blocking your canvass.

Hope this helps with your inquiry.

Thank you,
