Needlepoint - cross stitch and tapestry or crewel

Expert: Vinette de Phillipe - 11/16/2004

Question
I have cross stitched for many years and I'm looking at a tapestry pattern using wool yarn (online). What is the diffence between cross stitching and tapestry or crewel beside the type of thread being used. Is it diffent type of stitching?
Thank you

Answer
HI
cross stitching designs are made by using "X" type stitches to do the design. usually with thread

Crewel is using different stitches to fill in designs creating pictures.  usually with yarns

tapestry is usually a pictorial design done with different stitches

Hope this is of help to you.
