Experience
Former loan officer 23 of last 30 years. I have been a debt counselor and mediator since 1992. Current owner of Financial Emergency, Inc. A Debtor Advocacy organization. I also have a radio program called "Financial Emergency" where I routinely answer call in questions from listeners about credit, debt, and the collection system. My emphasis is on "Consumer/Debtor Protection" and the collection process.

Question
I received a call from a man stating I owed a large amount of $ would not give me info told me it was from us national bank lender and if I did not pay I would be arrested in the next 24-48 for money laundering and he was downloading the case into the system .  I have had some payday loans but thought I took care of them.  there may be one I had missed.  I went to the bank and got info that did not match and had that act closed a few days prior then he was telling me it was deposited.  He had my work, cell, e-mail even told me the bank acct I has at the time.  I am almost positive it is a spam but it still frightens me.  Wouldn't the place contact me first.

Answer
You are probably correct that this is a scam to get you to pay money you don't owe. I have received numerous calls recently regarding the same scam. If they call back ask a lot of questions. Who is the debt owed to. Ask their name and phone number. Play along with them and ask for bank routing info so you can make the payment direct to them. DO NOT GIVE YOUR BANKING INFO OR ROUTING NUMBERS.

You may also want to record the phone conversation if you can. Then if they continue to call file a police report and contact the state attorney general. A lot of people are falling victim to these people and being scrammed out of a lot of money.

dont be a afraid of them. Get aggressive and stand up to them. After you get enough info tell them you are filing complaints with the authorities. They will eventually go away.
