Question I have been receiving phone calls frompeople who do not speak English very well, (Indian, Iranian, or foreign) but they have very English names such as Billy Crawford or Bryan Adams. They claim that in 2005 I took out a pay day loan and closed the account before they received payment on it. They are saying they are going to file federal check fraud charges, and several other charges. This lawsuit is supposed to be filed today. They have threatened me and told me that I am going to jail, lose me kids, my job, etc. They have even called my work. I actually payed them $4,200 in Feb. and $285 at the beginning of July. (I know, stupid, huh) Well, I called my attorney general, local sheriff's dept, a laywer, filed a FTC complaint and so on because after doing a little research I found hundreds of similar complaints. They still are calling and will not give me any information at all. I have asked for the company name (which is the only thing they will give me) it is US national bank the united investigations division. Am I right to think this is a scam? I have quoted federal collecting laws to them and they keep telling me that these laws do not apply to internet businesses. Am I going to be sued?
Answer This is absolutely a scam. You may need to close your checking account and open a new one if they have your routing number. Never pay them another dime. You will probably never see your money again but you need someone to get on the phone with you and them to shut them up. You are safe and will not be sued or arrested.
