Negotiating Disputes - Hotel dispute

Expert: Michael Brotherton - 8/27/2008

Question
We stayed at a hotel- paid bill - left - 7 days later I recieve a notice in mail that the hotel was going to charge my debit card $440 for a television set they said we broke.
The tv did not work when we arrived at the hotel -but since we rented a suite, the other tv worked, and we had lots going on, so it wasn't that big of a deal. Is there anything we can do about this?

Answer
I would think they would have to prove you broke the TV to be able to charge you for it. You can dispute the charge with your bank if they do charge it to your card then plead your case with the bank. You may be able to dispute the charge over the phone or by e-mail. Check the web site for the bank that issued the card for dispute procedures the file the dispute.

Some hotels have been known to pull scams like this and have a history. Check with your state attorney general and see if they have any complaints similar to yours and if it looks like a pattern file a complaint with them.

Your state may also have a regulatory agency for hotels. Check with the Secretary of State and find out then contact them to see if they have had other similar complaints.

I hope this helps.
