Negotiating Disputes - Credit Card Dispute

Expert: Michael Brotherton - 1/8/2009

Question
Who do I contact regarding an issue with a credit card company that can not be resolved?  There was a charge put on my credit card that was not authorized.  I have been calling for at least 5 months and every month they say they have cancelled the charges but they keep showing up.  I have dates and names of the people I have talked to.  Because these charges keep going on automatically it puts my account over the limit so they charge another fee because of it.  On December 5, 2008 I was told they were going to credit the account for $11.98 for two months charges (November's and December's because it was already too late to stop December's charge)  In checking today nothing has been done but I was guaranteed it would be (as I have been every other month.  In the meantime $39.00 fees keep getting added.  Is there a part of the Better Business Bureau I should be asking for help?   Thanks so much.

Answer
Send a letter by certified mail return receipt requested advising them to cancel the charges once and for all or you will file a complaint with the FTC and your state attoreny general. You can also file a complaint with the FDIC and comptroller of the currency. These are federal enforcement agencies that can put a lot of pressure on the bank to get it together and fix the problem or face sanctions including fines. This should do tthe trick. If not, file the complaints.
