Subject: Is Nepal safe right now

Question
Hello.  There are travel warnings right now from the US state Dept. about Nepal and I have been keeping up on the activity of the Maoist Rebels.  They seem to be willing to get more violent if the peace talks do not go their way.  Any more insight on the situation?

Answer
Hello Kevin,

Yes, Nepal is very very iffy right now. Although there are a few intrepid travellers out there doing what they think is right.

Although there may not be an imminent danger to life - kidnapping, or extortion or outright violence like bombings on the scale that we are seeing Iraq right now there could be many uncertainties like flights being cancelled, hotels being shut down, etc. These things could make travelling very uncomfortable and you could end up getting stuck in the city.

So its your call. I would personally advise against travelling to Nepal right now. Pity, because its a beautiful country with great mountains and fantastic trekking routes. The people are also great and very friendly. Its cheap and very affordable.

Take care
Nilesh
