Question
hi, im planning on travelling in northern india nad nepal this july and august. However, i would also like to visit tibet from nepal by land if time allows. How difficult is it to get a visa and how much will it set me back? do i have to go into Tibet as  a group tour or is it possible to go into the country with just myself and my friend without one?How long will it take to get a visa and is kathmandu the place to get it or can i get it at the nepal-tibet border? I have heard that monsoon in Nepal is peak season in Tibet?

Answer
Hello Carroll,

You should get your Chinese visa to enter Tibet from the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu - not at the border. The travel operator will get it for you and it takes only a couple of days. It is advisable to go with a group and not travel on your own even if with a friend.

If you are planning to visit Tibet from Nepal by road then you should keep aside at least 2 - 3 weeks for this purpose unless you plan to fly back one way which is also possible.

The monsoon is peak season to go to Tibet as it does not rain that much in high altitude and also the roads are not snow covered.

Hope this helps.
Nilesh
