Question
QUESTION: Hey Nilesh,

Like your website, very helpful. I was just wondering. I read somewhere that you said, if you want to travel overland to China, from India, you have to go to Katmandu first. I thought that I heard that they only allow group travels from Nepal to Tibet. But I just want to move to Beijing. I would also love to teach in China, but I am Dutch and I hold no degree. I do have lots of teaching experience though.

Can you tell me about the general cost, going from Kathmandu to Beijing by bus/train, and do I need a 30$ visa for Nepal if I am only staying for a couple of days.
Is it easy and quick to get a visa for China?
And what do I need for that? I also want to teach private lessons in Beijing. Do you strongly recommend absolutely teaching legal, because I think obtaining a Z-visa will be quite hard without papers from your next school.

What is your experience in Asia. You still here and loving it? I extremely do. Right now I am teaching Tibetan monks in Dharamsala.

Thanks
ANSWER: Hi Rudd,

If you want to go to Beijing without going to Tibet (as I understand your mail) you can take a direct flight from New Delhi to Beijing. But if you want to go overland, then yes, you have to get to Kathmandu then to Lhasa and then take the train from there to Beijing (3 - 4 days).

You must check at the Nepal Embassy in New Delhi whether you need a visa to get into Nepal - it doesn't matter if its only for a couple of days. Yes, it is easy to get a visa for China - check at the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi and they should be able to do the needful.

I don't know much about teaching in China but I suppose the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi should have answers to that question.

I live in India in Bangalore and simply love it. I have been to Dharamshala (Macleodganj) many years ago when I was still in the Army and posted in Palampur.

Hope this information helps and if it does don't forget to rate me.

Ciao and take care
Nilesh

QUESTION: And do you know about the cost of a ticket by bus from Kathmandu to Llasa? The Cheapest? And ticket from Llasa to Beijing?

Thanks

Answer
Hello Rudd, I'm afraid I don't have that information as I did that journey many years ago.

Sorry about this.

You can try searching the internet for agencies who offer this trip as a service and then enquire with them either via email or phone.

Nilesh
