Subject: foamy urine

Question
QUESTION: Dear Doctor,
After my wife commented that my urine is a little foamy, I got some test done, blood and urinalysis. My renal functions are normal; urea - 5.3mmol/L,Creatine - 78 umol/L, eGFR - >60 mL/min/1.73m2, uric acid - 0.49mmol/L, calcium - 2.41 mmol/L, corrected calcium - 2.25 mmol/L and phosphate 1.30 mmol/L. My urine feme is Protein-nil, glucose-nil, Specify Gravity-1.005, pH - 5.0, Ketones-nil, blood-nil, Leucocytes-0, Erythrocytes-0, Epithelial cells-nil.
However, I am still concerned, therefor I took a 24 hour urine protein test. Urine Volume - 2600mL, Urine protein - 6.3mg/dL, 24H UrineProtein - 0.16g/24 hrs. My doctor said not to worry as it is only slighty elevated. He would be more concerned if my 24H UrineProtein is over 0.5g/24hrs.
Should I put this all behind me? I am trying to get a second opinion to make sure I am not in some kind of kidney problem. Thank you sir.

ANSWER: Hi Justin,

Thanks for asking my help on "Allexperts".

I agree with your doctor. There is nothing wrong with your kidneys.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah

QUESTION: Dear Doctor,
I read some of your other answers to other questions. It seems that I have what you call microalbuminuria; due to my high amount of protein found in the 24 hr urine test. I am still worried, is it going to get worse? what is causing protein presence in my urine?

Answer
Hi Justin,

I would repeat a 24 hour urinary protein estimation after about two weeks and see. If microalbuminuria persists, it is a cause for concern. In that case, you should get yourself evaluated for the presence of diabetes or hypertension.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
