Nephrology/Protien in Urine

Question
Hi,

When I was 17 I was diagnosed with MULTIPLE diseases, infections and the like. Doctors finally settled on saying I had Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) type 1. I was given pills such as prednisone, and I took them for about a year. I was sent for another biopsy, and the doctors reported that all they could find was small traces of scar tissue in my kidneys. 5 years later (I am 22 now) I have been off medications for about 3 years, but I still spill about 0.7-1.0 grams/liter of protein in my urine. Now Im trying to join the military as a pilot, and all my medical checks out...except for my protein spill. If I came to you as a referral (hypothetically of course) what would you say about my condition and my likelihood of being cleared to serve?

Answer
Zach,

Thanks for asking my opinion on "Allexperts".

MPGN type I with nephrotic syndrome is a progressive disease, with 50% of patients developing end-stage renal disease (ESRD) after 10 years and 90% of patients developing ESRD after 20 years.

I hope this answers your question. I am not sure what the armed forces would specifically be looking for, but on the surface, your chances of being cleared are slim. Sorry.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
