Nephrology/Kidney tumor

Question
Dear Dr, thank you for your past answer. It has helped my family and I. My mom has a angiomyolipoma that is 1.2 cm and is on her upper left pole of her left kidney. The radiologist thinks its 10 years old.
Will this cause her to have complications from this? my mom has pain on her side on and off but since she's been drinking boiled ginger and lemon water on a daily basis, she no longer experience any pain.  She's wondering why she hasn't felt anymore pain, is it possible that the tumor shrinked that's no longer causing pain?thank you so much. Sincerely, Martha

Answer
Martha,

Thanks for asking my help on Allexperts.

Angiomyolipomas are asymptomatic unless they rupture. These tumors do not shrink. The pain that your mother had been experiencing was probably due to something else.

Angiomyolipoma do not normally require surgery unless there is life-threatening bleeding. Some centers may perform preventative selective embolization of the angiomyolipoma if it is more than 4 cm in diameter, due to the risk of hemorrhage.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shah
