About Nicholas Unger
Expertise
I am particularly adept at answering any sort of question relating to the action of various neurotransmitters on neurons. Any sort of Neurophysiology/Cell Physiology or Neuropharmacology questions, particularly ion channel based in relation to physiological response. Anything other than that will earn you an educated guess.

Experience
I have worked in a Neurophysiology lab for 3 years now on various projects for my dissertation. My expertise is the hypothalamic homeostatic control mechanisms in thermoregulation. Also neural control mechanisms in general as well as Suspended Animation techniques and theory.

Question
Hi:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurogenic_shock

Here it says neurogenic shock is caused by damage to the CNS.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/2703355.stm

Here it says a man died from neurogenic shock resulting from a blow to the crotch. How can that be? He did not experience any direct blow to his brain or spinal cord [i.e. the "CNS"]. So how could an injury to a part of the body other than the CNS cause neurogenic shock?

"neurogenic shock resulting from total body burns"

How can total body burns cause neurogenic shock unless they directly attack the brain/spinal-cord?

I could imagine total body burns causing hypovolemic-shock as the burnt blood vessels leak excessive amounts of plasma. But neurogenic-shock? Just how does this work?

Thanks,

Green

Answer
Greetings Green,

I Don't pretend to be a Neurologist (although these things are very interesting). I think I might agree with you about the total body burns causing neurogenic shock. I think this is probably due to a poorly done autopsy and perhaps even uninformed juror's perhaps. Although I suppose anything is possible, as I said I'm not a neurologist but I think the Hypovolemic shock has more potential for being right in such a situation.

As for the blow to the crotch causing neurogenic shock, this does of course seem plausible. Part of the autonomic system does of course extend into the ground area into the genitiles. So naturally if you were say hit with a baseball or something along those lines you would temporarily disrupt that autonomic innvervation and cause reverberations up the axons of the nerves which are found just outside of the CNS. So as the shock travels up the chain it starts shutting off innvervation to blood vessels and boom. Neurogenic shock. Probably extremely uncommon if not rare, but it seems extremely plausible.

Cheers, and Interesting Find
