Nevada - primitive camping

Expert: CmdrMark - 9/23/2006

Question
Hello, I'm from NY and I really miss the NY style of camping. I live in Las Vegas, NV and for a while now I've been looking for a campground similar to the ones in NY. I'm looking for a heavily wooded area (forest) with a river, and very primitive. Preferably not too too far away from where the car has been parked. No water pipes, no cabins, no RV's, a real primitive area next to a river in which I can swim and use as drinking water if need be. Am willing to travel far, max 5-6 hours from Las Vegas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

>Hello, I'm from NY and I really miss the NY style of camping.

That's a beautiful area to camp in.

>I live in Las Vegas, NV and for a while now I've been looking for a campground similar to the ones in NY.

You're in the desert! For trees, think elevation.

>I'm looking for a heavily wooded area (forest) with a river, and very primitive. Preferably not too too far away from where the car has been parked.

Ok.

>No water pipes, no cabins, no RV's, a real primitive area next to a river in which I can swim and use as drinking water if need be.

Most rivers you find in forested areas will be rather small...and as for drinking, 100 years ago, sure but today? Out in the middle of nowhere isn't the place to get an intestinal parasite or bacteria.

>Am willing to travel far, max 5-6 hours from Las Vegas.

Nearby: Mt. Charleston and the surrounding National Forest
5-6 hours away: Toyibe National Forest between US6 and US50.
My favorites: Success Loop, east of Ely off US50/6 and along the back roads north of SR377 and FR014 by Manhattan and Belmont.

>Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Get a Delorme Nevada Atlas (delorme.com). It's a MUST for exploring public lands on the back roads. Got a GPS?

"When in Rome...." You're in Nevada! Do things you couldn't do in the wilds of New York. Go soak up to your neck in a natural hot spring where natives did the same thing 100 years earlier...Check out petroglyphs (rock carvings)that are millennia old...Lots of places out in the wilds where you'll be the only living human being in 100 square miles.
