Question Dear janet,
my wife and I want to go to Lake Tahoe this Aug.late,(hurricane season you know). We are interested in a resort (4-5 stars if possible) that will have a great view of the lake and have suites, one or two bedrooms. We will rent a van so getting around shouldn't be too bad, right? We are also interested in hiking trails though not
too difficult. We like good restaurants, some gambling but mostly beautiful scenery. Hoping you have some informatioin for us. Gus
Answer Where you stay will depend on how much "action" you want. If you are ok with a little bit of gambling, but a lot of scenery, stay at the Hyatt Incline Village. Its been remodeled recently and is beautiful....they have some beautiful vacation suites (that are also timeshares) with kitchens and all.....Check out the Hyatt website. Book soon for August! They have a great beach, beautiful pool area, and a small marina, also a great spa!!! Unfortunately, their restaurants aren't great, but if you decide to go there email me closer to the date at jkumar167@aol.com and I'll give you some ideas. They do have a very nice Sunday brunch, btw. For hiking, you might try sections of the Tahoe Rim trail...you can go as far or do as little as you want. There is a trailhead on the Mt. Rose Highway (hotel concierge can direct you) just four or five miles from the resort. Also, if you go there be sure to check out Sand Harbor State Park...a beautiful beach!! (nice little nature trail there too....)....and kayak the area to enjoy the clear Tahoe waters...Hotel can direct you to places that rent kayaks in Tahoe City. Another fun hike on the other side of the lake is the hike down to Emerald Bay...an easy mile down but a little harder back...you can check out the Vikingsholme castle while there.....also be sure to do one of the many cruises of the lake..the Hyatt has a fun one. You have to get out on the water to appreciate it. Also, Sand Harbor has a Shakespeare Festival in August....google Sand Harbor Shakespeare and you should find a web link...you won't find a more beautiful stage anywhere!!!! Now, if you insist on being close to the big casinos, you can stay at Harvey's ( a great four star resort) on the south shore, but I like the north shore better for scenery and ambiance. (Hyatt Incline does have a casino, just not a big one). Hope this helps. Tahoe is a great place to go. Its popular in late August, so book soon!
