Nevada - working in Vegas

Expert: Laine Wightman - 8/31/2002

Question
Hello, Laine! I and my husband are seriously considering a move to Vegas. We live in California now and it is just too unaffordable. We are both persuing college degrees and are working in the service industry while we do so. My question is: How easy/difficult is it to find a good waitressing and/or bartending job in Vegas. I assume that cocktailing is probably out because of the demand and competition, but what about restaurant waitressing? Is it probable that one could make upwards of $100/shift? I want to assume that it would be fairly easy to find a decent job due to the high number of restaurants. Am I correct? Thank you so much for any info.! -Audra

Answer
Hi Audra.
I do not know how difficult it is to find a good waitress/bartender job in Las Vegas.  I DO know that there are a zillion restaurants and video poker bars, plus regular clubs, casinos, and resorts that all need to be staffed 24/7!  I would think that anyone with experience would have an edge.
I am enclosing the URL for the online Las Vegas Review Journal Classifieds, and I hope that will help.

I wish you a lot of luck, and admire your attitudes and ambition.  Our daughter worked her way through college waitressing, and though she worked hard, and many hours, she did succeed, and is succeeding at her career (except that she just had twins a couple of weeks ago and is presently on maternity leave!).  She says she still misses waitressing because she loved all the people she met! :)
Of course, as you know, you can make more money at a more upscale hotel/resort restaurant, and free standing gourmet places would be the highest tips, all the way down to cocktail waitresses in casinos........locals casinos would make much less than places like the Bellagio or the Venetian, I would think.  If you need any feedback about the type of places you find out about, such as what KIND of place a certain place IS, please write back, and I will try to help.  I don't spend much time in the Southeast part of town, Henderson and Boulder City, so would know the least about places there.......
             Again, much luck,
                  Laine
