Answer
Interesting Question.

Spirit Guides are a relatively new definition on what used to be the Guardian Angel from Roman Catholicism and Angels from the Judaic First Testament writings, and the even earlier form of ancestor worship.

A Spirit Guide is by definition a nonphysical (non-corporeal) entity or soul who supports another’s spiritual maturation and life growth.

One form of this belief dictates that we are all spirit guides to others when we cease to be incarnate.

The concept of the Spirit Guide sometimes is called a form of Totemism (derived from the root -Oode in the Ojibwe language, which referred to something kinship-related).

This is a religious belief that is frequently associated with shamanistic religions.

The totem is usually an animal or other naturalistic figure that spiritually represents a person or, more likely, the clan and who guides in a benevolent fashion.

In this same vein the some form of the Spirit Guide is also ancestral, meaning that it can be the non-corporeal form of a dead ancestor who once propitiated, influences events in life to the benefit of an individual or a clan.

A spirit guide according to some modern psychics subscribe to the theosophical view of what a spirit guide is, and in this philosophy spirit guides are individuals who have lived many reincarnated lifetimes, and who are relatively free of karmic debts, have advanced beyond a need to reincarnate.

According to this theosophical view, each Spirit Guide is assigned to watch over an incarnate person, not only on this Earth but also on many other planets throughout the universe.

This belief dictates that spirit guides are chosen on "the other side" by us and The Divine before we incarnate, and that they guide us to follow our life's plan because we want them to.

There is no way to tell who (or what) one’s Spirit Guide is without having a direct contact with them, and according to the theosophical view, it is possible to meet one's spirit guide in dreams or on the astral plane, but only after a significant effort is accomplished by the aspirant.

Within the Christian Gnostic view of a spirit guide, these guides are planned with our life on earth before we incarnated.

Each of us would live our life with our spirit guide, who would not be visible or present directly to our awareness.

If this is the case, then everyone has a spirit guide because everyone planned his or her life prior to their birth.

Therefore in this version of the spirit guide concept, the spirit guide couldn't be a living relative, or an animal form.

Additionally a Spirit Guide is said to have lived at least one earthly life before becoming a spirit guide so that they can understand the struggles of human life.

Blavatsky talked about being advised by "Mahatmas", or discarnate personages from India and especially Tibet, who dressed and behaved according to the dictates of their respective cultures.

American Spiritualists often described their guides as resembling Native Americans.

Others described their guides in terms of what sounds like a mythologized Ancient Chinese appearance, and even Irish guides have been common.

Some techniques have been developed to allow an individual to meet their Spirit Guide.
The techniques that exist range from astral projection techniques to simple mind visualization exercises, Lucid dreaming, and meditative trances, though not any one or all will work for any one individual.

Another issue that must be considered in this discussion, does one Spirit Guide wish to be contacted, or respond if contacted? There may be no spiritual or need of maturation for one’s Spirit Guide to communicate with their charge, indeed if such a form of communication with a Spirit Guide complicates this or that individuals life, or gives them false illusions of their spiritual progress, then it is possible under the theosophical philosophical model, that the guide may decide not to respond regardless of the form of communication and contact.

In the end this is also a New Age concept that has been reconsidered in the later part of the 20th century, however there has never been an objective format to contact or validate an individuals spirit guide, at least not one method that I could recommned here and that would be useful.

I hope that this was helpful,

Blanchjoe
