Question Hey Jeff,
First of all, let me just come out and admit that I'm a die-hard
Jets fan. I hope you won't hold it against me, because from your
expertise bio you seem like the most qualified man for the job.
Here's the question:
I'm a screenwriter, and I'm trying to write a scene where a
former college QB finds himself scrimmaging with pros. He's in
the huddle and I want him to reference a college pass play,
saying something like. "Any of you guys know the (enter name of
college pass play here)?"
Then one of the players will say something like "yeah, we used
to run that one back at Auburn"
And then, communicating what the play is to his fellow players,
the player will say, "it's like the (enter name of comparable pro
play here)."
And they'll all nod and go out and run the play.
The key for me isn't so much the plays themselves (I won't be
describing the action meticulously) but the names of the plays.
Something that sounds cool and authentic, that's geared to a
receiver.
Got any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Answer Honestly, college and pro play names are totally out of the air. Most of the time, they have very little meaning to anyone who's not on the team... for a reason. It's really up to the coaching staff how they want to format their play names. Some college teams may use the same system as a pro team depending on how coaches derive their styles. You could probably make up any name and it would sound good.
Pro 87 Fly - Could be a play set up in the Pro Formation in which #87 runs a streak/fly (run straight up the field) play.
Which could be similar to something like...
Maine Slot Burn.
Just play around with all kinds of names until something sounds good that you could possibly derive meaning from! Thank you and you're welcome!
