Question
Hi.  I am looking for any information on a company based in Paterson (and at times possibly West New York) New Jersey.  American Salvage Company is its name.  I inherited stock certificates from my grandfather from this company.  I was able to find out a little from a source on the internet...

..but not much else.  I wrote to the Treasurer of New Jersey and they told me they'd never heard of these guys.  I'm trying to find out if the company was ligit.  Did it ever actually salvage a WWI ship?  Or was it just a total scam?  Anything would be of interest.  Thanks!

Answer
Interesting question, Michael

My own internet search (google.com) turned up exactly what
you had already found.

The information you seek undoubtedly resides in one or more
possible locations. I will list them for you, but I cannot
suggest which is more likely to be of help.

First, all corporations doing busness in the state must be
registered with the NJ Secretary of State. I don't know if
that was true that long ago, but it's worth a shot.

Second, the State Library has a outstanding section on
New Jersey history. The library is under the state's
Department of Education.

Another outstanding repository for New Jersey history is
Rutgers University.

Finallly, you might want to pursue the archives of
northern NJ's leading newpapers, the Newark Star Ledger, and the Bergen Record. Paterson has a newspaper but offhand
I can't recall its name.

If you pursue these leads, I'm confident that you will find
what you are looking for.

Best of luck.                            Homer
