Question Why is New Jersey called the Garden State?
Answer New Jersey has a long history of providing excellent quality farm produce, most notably it's extra sweet white corn, succulent tomatoes, and juicy peaches. New Jersey also ranks as one of the top three states in cranberry production.
Support for the nickname began with the Revolutionary War when food was provided to soldiers by the small farms of New Jersey, and in later years, continued with New Jersey truck farms providing floral and agricultural produce to cities in the area, particularly to the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
In 1954, the nickname "Garden State" was officially added to the New Jersey License plates.
