Question
What is the origin of the name Perry Street. in West Village, New York City?

Answer
Cindy,

It was named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, who commanded the U.S. fleet in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. After the battle, he sent the famous dispatch: "We have met the enemy and he is ours." His brother was Commodore Matthew Perry, who forced Japan to open itself to foreign trade.

Hope this helps.
