Subject: Brooklyn street name

Question
John,

I have noticed that one street in Brooklyn has 2 spellings - Beverley Road and Beverly Road.  It is noticbale because the BMT Brighton line station has the first spelling and the IRT Flatbush Av line has the second.

Looking at a street map it seems to be a continuous street running west to east.  The street map shows only Beverly Road.

Which is the correct spelling and why does one subway station have a different spelling from the other?

Thanks,

Allan

Answer
Allan,

Great question!
The spelling of Beverl(e)y Road depends on where
you are. As it runs through Brooklyn, the street
changes its spelling so that at the Brighton Line (Q)
station, the road is spelled B-e-v-e-r-l-e-y, while on the
2 and 5 lines, the spelling omits the final “e” B-e-v-
e-r-l-y.

Beverl(e)y Road station(on Nostrand Avenue at Beverl(e)y Road) opened 08/23/1920 and has two tracks, two wall platforms. Faux IND tile and tablets show the name as Beverly while booth and exit signs near the center exit shows name as Beverley. There are arguments in favor of both spellings. This difference in spelling is considered to be one of the mysteries of the NYC subway system!
