Question When was Frederick Douglass Blvd named Frederick Douglass Blvd? Was is just called 8th Ave before?
Answer Yes, the stretch north of 110 St were renamed in 1977 (much later than the 59 St to 110 St stretch which was renamed in 1883 to Central Park West). Some people continue to use the old name and it still works for the post office and on with mapping sites. In fact, a couple years when the Department of Transportation was installing new overhead signs they reverted back to the 8th Avenue name (not sure if those signs are still there).
One last point: while buildings on Central Park West are numbered starting #1, the buildings on Frederick Douglass begin with #2000 which is essentially a continuation of the 8th Ave numbering in Midtown which ends at #980 -- the skipping of #981 through #1999 building numbers represent the 51 blocks of CPW (20 numbers per block).
