Expert: Tom Bernardin - 12/15/2002

Question
Hi Tom,
I'm wondering why going up inside the Statue Of Liberty is still restricted. I plan on traveling to New York in March '03 and I thought that I could go up the Statue Of Liberty but I've found that access is still restricted. -why

Answer
Hi Dave,

I was at Liberty Island yesterday and someone about plans to re-open the Statue.  "No plans" was the reply.  I had heard that the National Park Service was waiting for additional metal detectors to be installed on Liberty.  (There are now detectors before you board the ferry.)  But it now looks like there are no plans to re-oepn any time soon.  But you can get off the ferry and walk around the island...and visit the souvineer shop.

If you are interested in a tour of Ellis Island, you can read about my tour offering at iMar.com.   My tour is listed as experience # 1352.

Tom
