AboutJennifer Expertise I travel to Manhattan frequently and can offer a unique perspective because I am a tourist.I have so much curiosity about Manhattan and that has led me to gather lots of great information about the city. I consider myself a hotel buff of sorts, and touring them and analyzing their attributes has become a hobby for me. I can give some good advice on restaurants, shopping, and in general just how to maximize those "new york moments" we all want to experience. Whether it is something as small as how to hail a cab, where to enjoy a cocktail and a romantic stroll, or how to dress so you don`t stand out as a tourist, go ahead and ask.

Question I will be in New York for the Labor Day Holiday. This will be my first trip to the City. I'm a young 50's lady ready to experience the whole NYC thing. Broadway, shopping, clubing, etc. What do I wear?
Answer First remember that NYC is full of all kinds of people with all kinds of dress so don't stress too much.
The most important thing to begin each outfit is comfortable shoes. This can be a challenge. Think of comfortable sandals, perhaps ballet flats ( the sporty ones are very cute with a rubber sole), and maybe bring a pair of cute running shoes or a sport sandal. The strappy high heel would be great anytime you aren't walking too far...for evening.
One thing I like to focus on is constructing an outfit that can go from shopping to museum hopping and then out for dinner or a cocktail without having to go home and change. You may be doing some afternoon shopping in Soho and then find a cool place for a cocktail and you want to feel like you can pop in . Just keep this in mind. I like traveling with lots of black, white, and neutrals....they are so easy to mix and match and look nice in the city. Black is kind of an urban color to wear. Stay away from too much flashy jewelry and too much makeup...and at times...jeans can sometimes look touristy. It will be warm so you will see sundresses and sandals.
I like to have one totally comfy outfit like sweatpants or yoga pants with running shoes or sport sandals for a day when you are doing hardcore tourist events like Statue of Liberty. Then, for evening it would be nice to have a sexy black sundress and strappy heels. This is a time to be fun and daring.
New York women have a way of looking urban, comfortable, classy, and ready for action.
Think about looking for a purse that leaves your hands free during the day. It will have a strap that crosses your chest. Nothing looks sillier that someone dragging around some large, uncomfortable purse while trudging around the city.
Have a great, tiny travel umbrella. Also, have some great sunglasses that you really like and pull your "city " look off.
Even though it is summer, I think summer pants look nice in the city, perhaps in linen or something breezy in khaki and then a white or black shirt. It may be pretty hot so think about linen and white. Also, pick clothes that you really feel comfortable in.
I hope this is helpful to you.
