Nissan Repair - 2001 Altima code P1401

Expert: Calvin Iwashita - 2/14/2008

Question
A week ago the SES light on my 2001 Altima appeared and today I went to my dealer to get the problem identified and an estimate. The code was P1401 and after 1 hour of checking the car (at 100$ per hour)I did not get an estimate but a  notice that they needed more diagnose time that could go aywhere between 30 minutes and four hours as they were looking for "wires that were probably causing a short". Is this likely for a problem like this?
Kind regards

Answer
Hi Victor -

I would definitely get another opinion.

Usually trouble codes are intermittent, and on top of that do not mean it is a matter of life and death. If you are not experiencing driveability problems, then obviously there is not pressing concern. I have known peoplewho have driven with that light on for years. The car's computer monitors about 50 sensors.

Anyway, what I would do first is try to reboot the computer. Remove the negative side of the battery terminal and wait for at least 30 seconds. Replace it and then start the car and see if the SES light still appears. You may also do this by removing the ECM fuse on the fuse block in the engine compartment.

If the code still persists, take it to a reputable and competent mechanic to get a sedond opinion.

Hope this helps -
calvin
