i have a 1997 nissan xe king cab pick-up (4WD) which needs a new clutch. i am wondering how i differentiate if i need a master or slave cylinder or a clutch kit- are there certain symtoms i should look for for replacing one part as opposed to the other? Also I as told it has a hydraulic clutch. is that true?

Hi Ang -

Yes, the system is hydraulic. This means that it uses brake fluid to activate the clutch. Here are the definitions:

Clucth Kit - consists of the clutch plate, bearing and disc. These are the main components of the clutch system, and the transmission needs to be taken off to access for replacement. Symptoms of a worn clutch is lack of power, engine revving while in gear going up hills.

Clutch master cylinder - When you depress the clutch, this provides fluid to the slave cylinder to release the clutch. When the master goes bad, you lose pedal pressure and you constantly have to pump the pedal up. Telltale signs could be leaking of the brake fluid in the car around the pedal area.

Clutch slave cylinder - Usually attached to the transmission, this component receives the fluid and compresses to activate the clutch. When the slave goes, you will have no clutch - period. The pedal will travel to the floor with no effort at all.
