Question
97 altima gxe - stop light was on all the time. found stop light switch plunger broken and replaced it but the light is still on. i pressed the stop light switch all the way back but light did not go off. checked the fuse it is okay. light goes off when fuse is removed. could you please guide me what to do next.

Answer
Hi David -

I have fixed a vehicle with the same problem before, and I can only guess if this is the right answer for you. It seems to be a common situation with Altimas.

Anyway, because the plunger breaks and causes the brake lights to be on all the time, it fused the connection in the brake light switch, causing the light to stay on, even though the switch is depressed.

Get a voltmeter and check the resistance across the switch terminals and see if that is it.

Hope this helps -
